Older and potentially vulnerable Freemasons who no longer attend Lodge meetings have been given a new way to keep in touch with each other and their Lodges with twice-monthly coffee mornings at the Scunthorpe centre – and it’s been backed by generous funding from the Province.
Called Brethren’s Brew by their creator, St Lawrence Lodge Almoner Rob Lang, the scheme is being financially supported by the Province’s Petitions Committee, which recognised the welfare benefit to our older members.
Rob’s invited members from Scunthorpe, Brigg, Barton, Crowle, and even Gainsborough for events which he says will have a number of benefits. “The members can come out to see each other during the day for a chat and a slice of cake. That, as well as looking forward to coming, will go a long way to combatting feelings of isolation and loneliness.
“What’s more, we’ll encourage Lodge Almoners to come, since they’ll have an ideal opportunity to spot and deal with potential welfare issues before they become problems.
“Although our prime focus will be the older members, there’s no reason they can’t bring wives and partners, and we recognise that they may need lifts from more able brethren or family members. Everyone will be welcome.”
Members of the Scunthorpe Masonic Building Management Board are enthusiastic supporters of Rob’s scheme, and have liaised with caterers to bake cakes and provide hot drinks.
Brethren’s Brew sessions take place at the Normanby Road premises in Scunthorpe between 10am and 1pm on the first and third Tuesdays throughout the year (with variations over Christmas). No need to book in!
