If you go down to the woods today…
July 31, 2019Somerset’s Freemasons have sent a £5,000 donation to add to the £77,000 contribution already given to the fund in support of residents in and around the flood-hit village of Wainfleet.
No strangers themselves to the problems caused by flooding, brethren in Somerset say they hope the donation will go in some way to improving the lot of the residents.
On behalf of their PGM David Medlock, Somerset’s Provincial Charity Steward David Maddern said: “Somerset has a great deal of affinity for those affected by flooding as we ourselves were affected during the winter of 2014 on the Somerset Levels. In that time we raised over £220,000 to help those people recover, and put right some of the damage caused. We wanted to keep a small amount of this money in reserve to help others in similar circumstances.”
Lincolnshire’s PGM Dave Wheeler said the letter and its donation had come as a complete surprise. He said: “Only those who have been affected by flooding can truly understand its devastating impact – and that includes the people of Somerset. The response of Freemasons there in giving £220,000 was a remarkable achievement, and it’s humbling to think they have given some of that money in support of Lincolnshire.
“I shall be thanking the Somerset brethren personally for this wonderful gesture, and I look forward to being able to tell them how their generosity has helped to speed up work to bring things back to normal in Wainfleet.”
